Any fan of Star Trek knows that Spock is driven by logic over emotion, and this leads to some very interesting perspectives that us “mere mortals” fail to see or understand.
Understanding error rates for high quality data results, for example, and then tuning them at a field level requires hundreds and often thousands of hours of analysis. Even though the fruits of this labor can have 10-times the returns, most service providers do not attempt it mostly because staff hours are tight; the project is risky; and there are other projects that must be completed.
In another article, we discussed the many different ways (and costs) that document processing service providers use to obtain their high-quality data. The best approach in terms of both cost efficiency as well as data quality introduces an intense focus on the error rates of OCR output for each individual field. While this focus yields superior results that can provide a service provider significant competitive advantage, it is also difficult to implement without the right process and staff.
Data Analysis and Automation
What if there was a way to automate the analysis? Spending so much time to obtain good results surely has inefficiencies doesn’t it?
Parascript offers services that provide this analysis and tuning, but we have to take a lot of time ourselves. It just doesn’t make good business sense to continue to do it this way.
If we approach the problem logically like Mr. Spock, wouldn’t we then understand that the current method is not logical, and therefore, should be re-thought and potentially scrapped altogether? Can we automate our own services?
Higher Efficiency and Solving the “Unsolvable”
Being the ever-tinkering and Spock-like scientists, our R&D staff has developed a unique and efficient process for obtaining ridiculous amounts of efficiency from processes that were once thought to be either already as efficient as possible or unsolvable.
The secret is that it starts with data, uses applied artificial intelligence, and ends with output that can be used in production environments that, in many cases, can produce data that is 99.5 percent accurate without any human intervention.
Artificial Intelligence & Parascript
Our approach is supported by the technology that we developed and use every day, but we turned it “inward” and are now ready to deploy this new technology to work for your organization.
Part of the enhanced ability to extract data so reliably is due to a “relax” in tolerance. It’s best to provide an example.
Imagine an application is developed to recognize images of a cat. The cat image it uses to learn how to recognize a cat is orange and is of a certain size and shape. Images of cats that fall outside of that description get treated as exceptions. In machine learning, this is typically referred to as “overfitting.” The system recognizes cats that match the input that was used to learn, but not so great with deviations. Humans are able to cross this “logic chasm” and identify cats of all shapes, sizes and colors.
It’s the same with your data – even structured forms have variance such as size, text fonts and distortions affect the location of fields and so on.
AI Crossing the Logic Chasm
The challenge is how to relax the tolerances of the analysis so that more data can be correctly located and extracted. We’ve built a new technology that can take sample input and automatically apply algorithms that help the system to jump to conclusions regarding data location that would never be considered.
The result is that your organization gets more data, more of the time, and it is tuned to meet your exacting thresholds for accuracy. This is all completed in one quarter of the time that it typically takes to tune and implement technologies based upon standard rules.
This efficiency allows us to focus more time on tuning, at a field level, the output to meet your exacting quality standards. Need some fields at 99.9 percent while others only require 95 percent accuracy? Our technology platform can do it.
