Image capture is the first step to successful document recognition. Image capture might not be under your control, but if it is, here are 3 simple rules to follow:

1. Use capture-software preferred specs:

• 200 – 300 DPI
• Uncompressed .TIFF format
• Black and white instead of color

2. Avoid when scanning:

• Skewed images
• Scaling images

3. Utilize state-of-the-art software features when the source image is not very good to begin with:

• Use image cleanup if available on the scanner (VRS for example)
